The Rhöner Säuwäntzt are a skiffle blues band from Eichenzell- Lütter in the Hessian Rhön . They play in the line-up of Martin Caba ( mandolin , harmonica , vocals , moderation ), Christoph Günther ( tea box bass , vocals) and Christoph Leipold ( washboard , milk jug , vocals) skiffle blues in Rhön and Hessian dialects . The dialect term Säuwäntzt means pork bellies , but it is also used to describe naughty children.

history

The idea for the band developed out of the intention, like the workers in the cotton fields, to simply play the blues on the veranda for fun after work, without virtuosity, but with as much heart as possible. The band members come from the working class. The experiences of the real working day with all its harassment and the arbitrariness and contradictions prevailing in the working world are processed in the song lyrics. The blues was chosen as the style because it comes from a comparable social background.

They gave their first concert on June 4th, 1994 on the Bahnhofsplatz in Fulda . The response was so surprisingly good that it became a permanent band project.

Music and stage show

The music from the cotton fields of the Rhön can be assigned to the cabaret scene and contains a clear trace of comedy and slapstick.

In the lyrics of the song, the singer takes on the role of the country boy in order to target topics from the world of work, politics and human coexistence. Another defining feature are the narratives of rural, drastic incidents that take up a large part of the performances. The stage design with the peasant costumes ( corduroy trousers , wide braces and wooden shoes ) and the traditional instruments of the skiffle is reminiscent of bygone times and serves to support the legend spread by the band that the blues originated in the cotton fields of the Rhön (although neither the cotton fields the origins of the blues can still be found historically there).

In the CD Ballerwantzt am Guckaisee they have enriched their musical style with elements from pop / hit songs . On their current CD, Die Frauenversteher , the Säuwäntzt return to their traditional style. It is based on a live recording from April 2008 and was released in October 2008. It addresses the coexistence of men and women in a relationship. There are also some songs that critically examine CD burning or current politics, among other things. The anti wind power song , published in 2014, became viral and comparatively well known via Soundcloud and plays a certain role among anti wind energy activists.

The band had numerous solo appearances and took part in festivals . They find their audience equally at alternative blues festivals as well as on folk evenings and at village and town festivals. The concerts were often broadcast on radio and television .
