Charlottenburg, sculpture center on the Spreebord

The Sculpture Center Am Spreebord is the production center including a collection of sculptures by various sculptors from more than a century. It is located in the Berlin district of Charlottenburg with access from Am Spreebord  9 or Sömmeringstraße . The publicly accessible exhibition in a newly built art hall on the grounds of the art foundry Hermann Noack presents, among other things, casts of works of art that were created in the foundry and cast contemporary art.

The new company complex, advertised as the Hermann Noack Sculpture Center and moved into in 2010, is 10,000 m² in size. The former location of the foundry in Berlin-Friedenau was given up for this purpose

New building and architecture

The new building complex in modern design language, based on designs by the architect Reiner Maria Löneke (Löneke Architects), is “intended as an overall design and artistic concept in which the various trades such as foundries, blacksmiths, wax formers and chiselers, artists and the public interact with one another fertilize and enrich ”. For example, workshops and production facilities as well as a multi-storey administration and training building were built, the facade of which curves slightly along the street parallel to the banks of the Spree . All work rooms receive sufficient daylight and are up to thirteen meters high. Employees can use modern technology and means of transport, which has led to better working conditions and an optimized production process.

All functional buildings use an orthogonal support system, their walls are made of polished exposed concrete and they have large-scale glazing facing north in order to exclude the influence of sun rays during production. Inside, partially all-glass walls separate the work areas. The loose U-shaped alignment of all the individual buildings, some of which are connected by means of a shed roof , form several inner courtyards, accessible through a large central factory gate. They take up the historical factory design again. The sculpture center for fine art foundry Hermann Noack was built in two construction phases, one after the other: first, the new factory halls were completed. This was followed in 2015 by the buildings for the sculpture forum in a second construction phase, which was inaugurated in 2017. The entire new company building cost around eight million euros .

description

The eight meter high exhibition hall (workshop gallery and sculpture museum) on the company premises was moved into in November 2017. For interested visitors, historical casts are exhibited here as well as working models of works that have yet to be cast. Guests can also attend a casting after prior registration or consultation, as is known from metal and bell foundries . The current owner of the company, Hermann Noack IV, praised the fact that the sculpture forum created a space "in which the creative process, craftsmanship, art reception and exchange are combined in a unique way". The exhibitions in the forum are either dedicated to a topic or an artist. The first exhibition is called Reflections and runs from October 2018 to January 25, 2019.

Well-lit studio rooms that are 3.80 m high and receive plenty of daylight through large windows are reserved for the artists. There are also balconies with a view of the Spree. A final structural step was the establishment of a bar (Bar Brass) , which is available to visitors and employees. The restaurateur Reza Danabi runs it next to his espresso bar on Mommsenstrasse.
