Skybus Airlines ceased operations in 2008. The information in italics refer to the last status before the end of operation.

Skybus Airlines was a US low-cost airline based in Columbus (Ohio) that operated exclusively domestically. It had set itself the goal of offering the cheapest air travel in the United States. On April 4, 2008, after Aloha Airlines and ATA Airlines , Skybus was the third US airline to cease flight operations within a week because the poor American economic situation and the high kerosene price could no longer keep Skybus alive.

history

Skybus Airlines was founded in 2006 in Columbus, USA. The airline had a relatively high start-up capital with more than $ 160,000,000 in start-up capital from various investors and investors. Operations began on May 22, 2007 from Port Columbus International Airport . Airbus A319-100 aircraft leased from competitor Virgin America were used to start operations. These 144-seat aircraft had a significantly more generous seat pitch compared to the 156-seat Airbus A319s purchased directly from Airbus. The first self-ordered aircraft followed shortly afterwards. However, Skybus Airlines was a very short-lived airline, on April 4, 2008, Skybus, after Aloha Airlines and ATA Airlines, was the third US airline to cease operations within a week because the poor American economic situation and the high kerosene price no longer keep Skybus alive could. After the end of Skybus Airlines, the aircraft leased from Virgin America were returned to the owner and the Airbus A319s still pending delivery to Airbus were canceled.

aims

On April 24, 2007, Skybus Airlines initially announced eight flight destinations, all of which were served from the hub in Columbus. Most recently, Skybus served 12 destinations in the United States. Smaller airports were often flown to in order to save landing fees.

Prices

The prices for the tickets started at US $ 10 for every 10 seats per flight (excluding taxes) and increased with the number of tickets sold. In order to save costs, all comfort was foregone. Food, drinks and items such as pillows or blankets had to be bought and the seat pitch was significantly smaller compared to other American airlines. Checked baggage (less than 50 pounds) was charged a fee of US $ 5 per item, and bags between 50 and 75 pounds were charged a fee of US $ 25. With Skybus there was free choice of seats, but similar to the European counterpart Ryanair, boarding the plane before regular passengers could be bought for US $ 10. Like Ryanair, the airlines wanted to position themselves as an ultra-low-cost airline and their prices were mostly 25 percent below those of their main competitor Southwest Airlines .

Orders

The first leased A319s came from Virgin America and, with 144 versus 156 seats, were not as tightly packed as the aircraft ordered directly from Airbus.
