Skywalk Spittelau, exit Guneschgasse

The Skywalk Spittelau - a bridge for pedestrians and cyclists - connects Guneschgasse in Vienna's Döbling district with the Spittelau am Alsergrund underground station . In addition, a connection to the “Skyline” office building, which is currently under construction, should be possible via the no longer used tram route to Heiligenstadt .

history

Skywalk Spittelau

In a competition jointly carried out by MA 29 - Bridge Construction and Foundation Construction together with MA 19 - Architecture and Urban Design, 47 teams of architects submitted proposals, five of which were examined in a second round for the architectural, technical and economic implementation.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the building planned by ARGE Architekturstudio Bulant & Wailzer took place in July 2006. The most striking feature of this steel and glass construction is the ten-meter-long breakthrough through the masonry of the light rail arches .

In order to be able to lift the bridge structure, which crosses Heiligenstädter Strasse at a height of eleven meters, unhindered, both Heiligenstädter Strasse and parts of the Gürtelbrücke were closed between November 18 and 20, 2006 .

Between November 25 and 27, 2006, the bridge structure was lifted over the Döblinger Gürtel between Guneschgasse and the wall breakthrough, which also made extensive roadblocks necessary here.

On August 20, 2007, City Councilor Rudolf Schicker handed over the Spittelau Skywalk to its destination.

Technical specifications

  • Length: about 120 meters, of which 10.5 meters through the light rail pillar
  • Width: 4.5 meters
  • Weight of the structure: 120 tons
  • Weight of the frame structure for the glass structure: 16 tons
  • Glass wall surfaces: 600 square meters
  • Glass roof areas: 560 square meters
  • Construction costs: approx. 3 million euros

In order to avoid an excessive increase in the air temperature within the Skywalk Spittelau, ventilation flaps were installed which should open automatically.
