Slava Raškaj (born January 2, 1877 in Ozalj (now Croatia ), † March 29, 1906 in Stenjevac ) was a painter.

Slava Raškaj was deaf from birth . Their schooling took place in Vienna at a primary and university college for "deaf and dumb" children, young people and adults. In 1892 she returned to Ozalj. Her then teacher in Ozalj and his wife noticed Slava's particular talent for painting and drawing. The Croatian-Hungarian painter Bela Čikoš-Sesija taught Slava drawing for several years , in the field of watercolor, pastel and oil painting , although she was actually self-taught . Slava Raškaj used two painting techniques in picture painting, which were rare in her time: the watercolor and pastel style .

Her watercolors represent the high point of Croatian watercolor painting towards the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. In addition, Slava Raškaj was one of the first artists who had the right feeling for pigment and water proportions in watercolor design. In this regard, the watercolors you have created are seen as an example of an ideal watercolor. Her first watercolor was her self-portrait and is probably the most famous watercolor in Croatian painting.

There are two phases to consider in her artistic career. In the first phase the drawings and the color are expressions of their pure identity . In the second phase, her best works emerge, which are above all expressions of her feelings: Kruške (The Pears), Suncokreti (The Sunflowers) and Potočnice (Forget-me-nots). It was then that the Lopoči (Water Roses) cycle was created, which included her very best works. In 1898 she took part in the art exhibition of the Society of Croatian Artists in Zagreb . At the beginning of 1900 she exhibited her works in an art exhibition in St. Petersburg and in 1902 in Zagreb. Suffering from severe depression , which was artistically expressed in the work "The Abandoned Watermills and Ruins", Slava Raškaj was admitted to a psychiatric clinic, where she died in 1906 at the age of 29.

Nowadays, many institutions and schools in Croatia deal with deaf and disabled children and many of them bear the name of Slava Raškaj. In an effort to wrest her name from oblivion, the Croatian Post issued a stamp with her self-portrait, and the Croatian Volksbank dedicated a 200 kuna silver coin to her.
