Slavko Kolar (born December 1, 1891 in Palešnik near Garešnica , Croatia, † September 15, 1963 in Zagreb ) was a Croatian writer.

Life

Kolar was the son of a teacher. He spent his childhood in his mother's homeland, in Čazma (Moslavina), and attended high school in Požega and Zagreb, and finally the business school in Križevci . After the First World War he spent a study visit to France. He then worked as an agronomist on various state estates in his homeland (Križevci, Čazma, Gornji Hruševac, Petrinja, Slavonski Brod, Požega and Božjakovina). In 1944 he went to the partisans as administrator of the Božjakovina estate, where he returned after the war and retired at his own request. From 1946 he lived as a freelance writer in Zagreb.

Works

Slavko Kolar wrote a number of excellent short stories in the interwar period. The setting of his stories is the Croatian village and the small town, which, unlike many other writers, are portrayed with a kind of sad humor. Kolar is therefore considered the most important modern Croatian humorist. After the Second World War, in addition to the big city, he also addressed fascism .
