Slievenagriddle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Slievenagriddle ( Irish Sliabh na Gridille , "mountain of the baking sheet", also called The Giant's Griddle ) is a megalithic site near the hamlet of Saul, east of Downpatrick in County Down in Northern Ireland .

It is a rare example of an intact megalithic complex with only the large capstone protruding from the top of the hill, overlooking the Irish Sea to the Isle of Man and Cumbria . Since it has not been examined, opinions differ as to which type of system it belongs to. The complex is described as both a Passage Tomb or Collapsed Portal Tomb and a rare example of a large megalithic stone box , a smaller example of which can be seen in Drumena, also in County Down

Nearby are the Court Tomb of Ballyalton and the Portal Tomb of Loughmoney .
