Slipping (from English. To slip, to slide) means in shipping to lower or get watercraft into the water with the help of a boat trailer or slip wagon .

This is particularly common for dinghies , sport boats and sport catamarans . Usually you need a slipway (also called slip for short). This is a sloping ramp that is attached to the deeper water. Such a slipway is available in most harbors and at sailing clubs. Public slipways can also be found on public waters such as waterways, lakes, rivers and in coastal areas. If the bank is sufficiently flat, it is also possible to slip directly from the beach or bank. Slipping is also one of the central competencies of DLRG facilities , water rescue services or fire services for their inflatable boats , multi-purpose boats or lifeboats .

Slipping is only sensible on boats with a shallow draft , because otherwise the slip trolley would have to be lowered too far into the water and then hardly be able to be pulled out again, especially when launching. Keel yachts are usually not slipped, but instead are put in and out with a crane.
