List of domestic dogs

The Slovenský Cuvac is one of the FCI ( No. 142, Gr. 1, Sec. 1 ) recognized dog breed from Slovakia.

Origin and history

The Slovenský Cuvac, actually Slovenský čuvač or Slovak Chuvatsch, is one of the white-haired herd guard dogs in Europe. The name was derived from the Slovak word čúvať (for example for “to hear” or archaic “to guard, to be careful ”) and indicates the vigilance of these dogs .

The Slovensky Cuvac is native to Slovakia. According to the breed association, breeding began with dogs from the Tatra Mountains . The first litter records are from 1929. The stud book was created in 1933 by Anton Hruza, professor at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Brno .

description

The Slovensky Cuvac is a large, white mountain shepherd dog with strong bones and a balanced temperament. His hair color is pure white, a yellowish tinge to the ear is allowed but not desired. The long-haired coat is slightly wavy, but not curly and not parted on the back. Slovensky Cuvac do not need to be bathed, cut or trimmed. The hair is largely self-cleaning, brushing from time to time, especially when changing hair, is sufficient. The texture of the fur prevents heat build-up in summer, while in winter it stores body heat. The eyes should be dark brown in color and oval in shape. Eyelids, lips, nose and balls of the feet are pigmented black. The ears are set high, not too long and close to the head. The richly hairy tail is always carried hanging at rest (resembling a cigar shape), but may be swung sickle-shaped over the croup when excited. Rods curled up or lying on their backs are not permitted. The movements of the Slovensky Cuvac are light, expansive and flowing with a preference for a harmonious trot. With a size of up to 65 cm in bitches and up to 70 cm in males and its thick coat, the Slovensky Cuvac is an imposing appearance.

Essence and properties

When socialized appropriately, the Slovensky Cuvac is quite friendly and open-minded, but also vigilant. He behaves cautiously, expectantly and cautiously towards strangers and unfamiliar situations. He is a pleasant companion dog who is also suitable for tasks such as therapy , rescue and search dog work . Because of its natural protective behavior, the Slovensky Cuvac may not be trained as a guard dog. The Slovensky Cuvac must not be brought up with harshness, but must be brought up with sovereign calm, patience and level-headed consistency.

The Cuvac used to guard the herd, house and / or yard. Today he also proves himself within the family due to his watchful, balanced and loyal behavior.
