Smith's Grain Store is a historic building located at 9 Tyne Street in the Victorian town center of the New Zealand city of Oamaru in the Otago region . The structure extends back to Harbor Street.

It was built in 1882 as a grain store for Joseph Smith. The architect was James Johnston, the main competitor of the Oamarus architectural firm, Forrester & Lemon, which at the time dominated the construction of public and commercial buildings . Like many designs by this architect, the facade is designed in the Italianate style with elements of the Neo-Renaissance .

The masonry with the ornate windows and capitals made of Oamaru Stone was done by Hamilton and Co. , the carpentry work by Henry Francis Sidon. The warehouse had a capacity of 30,000 sacks of grain.

The building has an extraordinarily lavishly decorated facade for a grain store.

After being used as a grain store, it was used in many ways. The Oamaru Mail newspaper had its offices and printing house here from 1906 to 1970. The Presbyterians of South Oamaru gathered here until their own church was built.

It served as a dance hall, roller skating rink, as the first seat of the North Otago Farmers' Cooperative and joinery.

The building with its large interior now serves as a passage between Harbor Street and Tyne Street and for public events, with a gallery of local artists on the upper floor.

On July 2, 1987, the building was classified as a Category 1 Monument (Historic Place Category I) by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust under the number 4380 .

The structure is owned by the Oamaru Whitestone Civic Trust, an organization dedicated to the preservation and economic exploitation of Oamaru's Victorian heritage.

It is part of the Harbor / Tyne Street Historic Area ensemble, which is also under protection . The neighboring buildings Darling McDavell Limited, Stock and Station Agents and Union Offices are also protected as historical monuments.
