National Museum of Natural History

The National Museum of Natural History ( USNM ; National Museum of Natural History ) is a museum of natural history at the National Mall in Washington, DC , United States . It is one of the 19 museums in the Smithsonian Institution . The museum was opened on March 11, 1910, but construction work was not completed until June 20, 1911. Admission is free and it is open all year round, with the exception of December 25th.

With 7.4 million visitors, it was the museum with the most visitors in the vicinity of the Smithsonian museums in 2009. 185 natural scientists work in the museum complex , the largest number of scientists in a museum worldwide.

Collections

The collections include approximately 500 million specimens of plants, animals, fossils, minerals, stones and meteorites, and human cultural artifacts. In November 2007, the National Museum of Natural History was expanded to include a butterfly pavilion. The museum exhibits u. a. also made the Hope diamond .
