The Smocza Jama cave (German: Drachenhöhle ) is a cave in the Wawel massif in the southern foothills of the Kraków-Częstochowa Jura in the old town of the former Polish capital Kraków . It is located directly above the Vistula .

Location and description

The cave is 276 meters long and has a level difference of 15 meters. It has two openings at a height of about 205  m npm , one directly on the river and the other on the castle wall of the Wawel. The cave was already inhabited in the Stone Age. It consists of three large chambers. In the early modern times, the cave was home to an inn described by Jan Andrzej Morsztyn and even a brothel. Therefore, the cave entrances were walled up several times.

etymology

The name can be translated as the dragon's cave and alludes to the legend of the Wawel dragon , who is said to have lived in the cave.
