Snellius (A802)
The Mr. Ms. Snellius (A 802) is one of two hydrographic survey vessels of the Royal Netherlands Navy and a lead ship of the same class of ships. She was laid down in June 2002 at the royal Scheldt shipyard in Vlissingen in the Netherlands . The launch took place in April 2003 , the commissioning in December 2003. The Snellius is stationed in Den Helder .
The sister ship is the Mr. Ms. Luymes (A 803) .
Surname
The Snellius was named after the Dutch astronomer and mathematician Willebrord van Roijen Snell (* 1580 in Leiden , Netherlands ; † October 30, 1626), also known as Snell van Royen or Snellius.
tasks
The main tasks are military as well as civil maritime cartography , sea depth measurement and the search for underwater obstacles in the North Sea , the waters of the Netherlands Antilles and around Aruba .
The areas of application also include oceanography and meteorology . Additional scientific equipment can be accommodated on board for this purpose. Since the Dutch coast guard does not have its own ships, Mr. Ms. Snellius is also used for fisheries protection , coastal surveillance, search and rescue , environmental protection and disaster response. The ship is equipped with a hose barrier for the last two tasks.
