Société royale belge des watercolorist
The Société Royale Belge des Aquarellistes ( German Belgian Society for Watercolor Painting ) is an association of Belgian artists who work with watercolors . It was founded in Brussels in June 1856 under the chairmanship of Jean Baptiste Madou .
history
Inspired by the British Royal Watercolor Society , which has existed since 1804, a group of 16 watercolor painters met on June 11, 1856 to establish such an association in Brussels. Founding members included Paul Jean Clays , Willem Roelofs , Edmond Tschaggeny , Richard Baseleer and others. Members were Belgians and Dutch living in Brussels. Foreign watercolor artists could become honorary members.
The association organizes annual exhibitions in various locations in Brussels. The first exhibition was from July 16 to August 15, 1856 in the Hotel d'Assche (Place des Palais). Others took place in the Hotel Arconati-Visconti, in the Ducal Palace (today Palace of the Academies ), in 1880 in the New Palace of Fine Arts (now KMSK ) and in 1890 in the Modern Museum (today part of the KMSK). At the beginning the society had 20 members, later it grew to 40. From 1870 the addition “Royal” was added to the name.
Society played an important role in the spread of watercolors in Europe. Similar associations were formed in other countries, around 1876 in Holland with the Hollandsche Teekenmaatschappij , in France around 1879 with the Société des aquarellistes français , in Germany with the Society of German Watercolorists or in Austria with the Watercolorists Club located at the Künstlerhaus Wien .
