The Sociedad Quimica y Minera (SQM) is a Chilean chemical group. According to its own statements, the company is the world's largest manufacturer of potassium nitrate and iodine products and one of the largest producers of lithium salts.
history
The Sociedad Química y Minera goes back to a sales office Maria Elena Nitrate Office founded in 1926 by the Guggenheim family in Chile . In 1968 the Chilean nitrate industry was merged into the Sociedad Química y Minera and nationalized in 1971, whereby Corfo took over 100% of the shares. From 1983 to 1988 the company was privatized again and the Chilean pension fund took over part of the shares. In 1995, SQM was listed on the New York Stock Exchange and began producing potassium chloride from the Salar de Atacama . In 1997 the production of lithium carbonate as the Salar del Carmen began . In the following years the business was internationalized through acquisitions and joint ventures : acquisition of Kemira Emirates Fertiliser Company (2005), takeover of the iodine business of DSM (2006), joint ventures with Coromandel in India (2009), Qingdao Star in China (2009) , Roullier in France (2009), Lithium-Americas Corp. in Canada (2016) and Kidman Resources in Australia (2017).
In 2015, the largest shareholder was the Julio Ponce Lerous Pampa Group with 32% .
Markets
SQM produces fertilizers and various chemicals such as iodine , lithium and potassium compounds which are mainly obtained from caliche and brine salt deposits in the north of Chile, such as the Salar de Atacama. The products are delivered to 110 countries with 89% of sales outside of Chile. A joint venture is operated with the French Roullier Group , which markets , among other things, Plantacote long- term fertilizers.
