The Società Tram Elettrici Mendrisiensi , abbreviated TEM, operated a meter-gauge electric tram in the canton of Ticino , which connected the cities of Chiasso and Riva San Vitale via Balerna , Mendrisio and Capolago .

history

The Società Tram Elettrici Mendrisiensi SA was founded in 1907, construction began in 1908, and started its operation 1910th The northern starting point of the tram was in Riva San Vitale at the lower end of Lake Lugano . The route then led to the other side of the valley to Capolago, where there was a connection to the SBB, the ship and the Generoso rack railway . Chiasso was reached via Mendrisio and Balerna, where the terminus was located immediately before the border crossing to Italy. The main depot and workshop was located in Chiasso Boffalora, a remise was maintained in Capolago. The railway ran completely in the existing roads and was operated with 800 volts direct current. The route length was 11.9 kilometers and 49 stations were served.

Between Chiasso and Mendrisio the tram ran every 30 minutes and between Mendrisio and Riva San Vitale every hour.

When a total renovation was unavoidable after the end of the Second World War, the decision was made to run a bus. The line between Riva San Vitale and Mendrisio was closed in 1948, the rest of the line from Mendrisio to Chiasso on December 31, 1950. The Società Tram Elettrici Mendrisiensi SA changed its name to Autolinea Mendrisiense SA in 1953 and now operates the bus routes in Mendrisio.

The former tram depot in Mendrisio was used by Autolinea Mendrisiense until 2010 , while the depot in Capolago still serves as a garage for the company's buses. After the tram was shut down, the rolling stock was taken over by the Lugano-Cadro-Dino-Bahn .
