The Jägerken from Soest
The Jägerken von Soest is a modern art figure based on the literary model of the Jäger von Soest in Grimmelshausen's novel Der adventurliche Simplicissimus . Simplicius, the main character of this novel, spends some time in Soest , just as the author knew Soest from his own stay.
history
The picaresque novel has autobiographical traits and describes the life of a daredevil who lived in booze at the time of the Thirty Years' War .
Todays situation
From this literary figure the modern Soester Jägerken developed. Grimmelshausen does not use this term. In 1976, on the 300th anniversary of the death of the novelist Grimmelshausen, the editors of the Westfalenpost came up with the idea of creating an original figurehead and presenting it to the mayor at the opening of the All Saints' Fair. The "Jägerken" is now part of the All Saints' Fair in Soest, such as the horse market and bull eye .
A new “Jägerken” is appointed every year in Soest. It appears on official occasions as an urban figurehead - often at the side of the mayor or the Bördekönigin . The selection criteria also include the profession or a (non-profit or social) association in which the candidate is active and the respective incumbent represents himself. Council members, policemen, nurses, athletes, singers and scouts slipped into the jacket of the “Jägererkens”.
The first Jägerken was Peter Brüseke (SPD), later Mayor of Soest. News and 43rd Jägerken (2018/19) is Till Heemann. He represents the Soest feud . A historical event in the city's history from 1440 to 1449 (conflict with the Archbishop of Cologne ), which today is relived every two years by 1,000 participants as part of an event of the same name.
