The Solemyida are an order of mussels (Bivalvia), which belongs to the subclass Protobranchia within the class of mussels. The oldest representatives of this group have been known since the Lower Ordovician .

Characteristics

The order is characterized by housings with identical valves, the front end of which is usually elongated ("inaequilateral"). The shell is aragonitic with homogeneous or prismatic, z. T. also cross-lamellar microstructures. The lock is taxodont , with few teeth or completely toothless. The ligament can be external or internal. The sphincter muscles are uniform (isomyar) or irregular (anisomyar).

Way of life

The representatives of the Solemyida order developed a special way of life. They live mostly buried in the soft sediment and live in symbiosis with sulfur-oxidizing bacteria , on which they feed. The stomach is therefore greatly simplified, the gills enlarged and the siphons largely reduced.
