The Soleturm is a tower in Bad Salzelmen , a district of Schönebeck (Elbe) in Saxony-Anhalt .

history

The tower was built in 1776 on behalf of the leaseholder of the Schönebeck saltworks, Abraham Gansauge. It was built from rubble stones , has six floors and is 32 meters high. Originally the round tower tapering towards the top was the hull of a Dutch windmill . The wind art is used to convey the brine from the 85 meter deep shaft III located below the tower in order to use it for salt production. The brine source delivered 1000 m 3 of brine with a salt content of 10 to 12% daily . Until around 1850, the saline at Schönebeck was only drawn from this shaft. As early as 1792, however, the changeover to extraction by a steam engine , which was built east of the tower. The 40 hp engine was one of the first steam engines in Prussia . The windmill attachment has been removed. From 1829, more machine houses followed in the vicinity of the tower, the so-called Kunsthof . The tower continued to be used in connection with brine extraction until it was relocated to another source, the alder spring, at the end of the 20th century .

Todays use

The brine tower is part of the museum's Kunsthof Bad Salzelmen . There, reports on the salt boilers of the late Middle Ages are presented in the show house, as well as interesting facts about salt production and the life of the boilers. Several technical facilities for brine extraction have also been preserved in the tower.
