The Solingen class is a series of five cargo ships on the Hamburg-America Line (HAPAG). The ship class followed up on the shipping company's West India service, which was maintained before the Second World War .
history
construction
After the extensive loosening of the shipbuilding restrictions of the Potsdam Agreement , HAPAG rebuilt its cargo ship fleet from 1950 onwards. Starting with the single ship Hamburg , the sister ships Odenwald and Spreewald or the Brandenburg class , the HAPAG fleet grew again continuously. Soon afterwards, the Hamburg-America Line ordered five motor ships of the same type from the Flender shipyard in Lübeck for service in the Caribbean ports. Together with the five HAPAG ships of the Solingen class, the shipping company Christian F. Ahrenkiel ordered a sixth sister ship, the Esperanza . This was used by HAPAG in long-term charter. On August 2, 1955, the shipping company was able to take over the type ship of the class, the Solingen, from the shipyard. A year and a half later, on April 13, 1957, the series was complete.
Use at HAPAG
As planned, the trio of ships was used for the West India and West Coast Central America service. The ships were taken over by the new Hapag-Lloyd in 1970 when HAPAG merged with NDL .
Later career
The ships were sold in 1971/72. Three of the ships arrived at Chinese scrappings in 1980 and 1983 (the former Esperanza in Spain in 1982), two more were only deleted from the register in 1992.
technology
The ships of the series were conventional general cargo ships with superstructures just aft amidships above the propulsion system and versatile loading facilities. The ships were equipped with 12 conventional loading booms (eight 3/5 tons and four 5/10 tons) as well as a 60-ton heavy lift boom to take over heavy lift in hatch 2. In front of and behind the superstructures there were two dry cargo holds each with an intermediate deck.
The marine propulsion consisted of a Sulzer six-cylinder two-stroke engine of the type 6SD72, which was manufactured under license by the French shipyard Forges et Chantiers de la Méditerranée .
