Solitaire is a Finnish speed and thrash metal band from Eura that was formed in 1995.
history
The band was founded in May 1995 by guitarist Riku Salminen and bassist Mikko Rautiainen. In November of the same year, drummer Rami "Manu" Koivisto joined the band. In May 1996, Mika Savolainen, a singer, joined the band. The rest of the year the band spent rehearsing and developing new songs. In February 1997, Onni Kilkku, a new drummer joined the band. The first demo followed in May, as well as the first live performance on May 24th. Singer Mika Savolainen left the band in July and was replaced by Juha Alam in October. Guitarist Mika "Waaqqu" Vaakanainen joined the band in August. In November singer Alam left the group again, whereby guitarist Salminen also took over the position of singer. In May 1998 singer Ville Kilkku, brother of drummer Onni Kilkku, joined the band, which he left in August. Singer Savolainen came back to the band. Later that year, drummer Kilkku dropped out and was replaced by Kalle "Kalu" Valanne in December.
The second demo was recorded in January 1999. In June, the band on the compilation was The Spirits of the New Age of Hate Ball Records represented. A third demo was recorded in November. In May 2000 the band signed a contract with Sonicattack , a German company that sells MP3s by downloading over the Internet. In August 2000, the third demo was offered there as a download, but the company was closed again in December of the same year. Another demo followed in March 2001. In April the band recorded a video for the song Listen to the Priest . In September the band signed a contract with the German label Iron Glory Records . In November the band appeared on the compilation Pounding Metal Vol. 4 - Destroy Mainstream! . The rest of the year they worked on their first album.
On September 30, 2002, the debut album Rising to the Challenge was released. A music video for the song Rising To The Challenge was created in January 2003. Two appearances outside of Finland followed in July: July 11th at Headbangers Open Air and July 19th at Keep It True . The rest of the year the band spent writing new material. In January 2004, work began on the album Extremely Flammable , which was released on August 30th. In October 2004 an appearance at the Heavy Metal Maniacs Festival in the Netherlands followed . In December 2004 her label Iron Glory Records broke up. A festival appearance in Estonia followed in July 2005 . In August the band reached a contract with the German label Battle Cry Records . The rest of the year the band worked on a new album. In early 2006, the band went into the studio to record the album Invasion Metropolis . A concert in Itzehoe followed in May, which was followed by the album's release on May 29th.
In July the band performed in Luxembourg . In November the band was featured on the Metal On Metal II compilation . Singer Savolainen left the band in December, after which guitarist Salminen again took over the vocal position. In February 2007 an appearance in Tampere followed . In the summer, further appearances followed, as well as rehearsals for another album. In November the band reached a contract with the Finnish label Ektro Records . The recordings for the next album took place in 2008, which was released on December 10th under the name Predatress . In the same year, drummer Kalle Valanne and bassist Mikko Rautiainen left the band. At the beginning of 2009 bassist Lauri Perttula and drummer Jari Rantanen joined the band. A gig in Helsinki followed in autumn . The first appearance in Sweden followed in October .
