Solomon Ivanovich Dodashvili

Solomon Dodashvili ( Georgian სოლომონ დოდაშვილი ; Russian Соломон Иванович Додашвили ; born May 17, 1805 in Magharo , Kakheti ; † August 20, 1836 in Vyatka ) was a Georgian philosopher, teacher, journalist and fiction writer.

Dodashvili was born at a time when Georgia was already part of the Russian Empire . He studied at the University of Saint Petersburg , where he graduated in 1828 with a master's degree in philosophy. In Saint Petersburg he had contact with the Decembrists and in 1825 witnessed the suppression of their revolt against the rule of the tsar. During his studies he published under the pseudonym Dodajew-Magarski , Russian Додаев-Могарский , a significant work on traditional logic, which appeared in 1827.

After finishing his studies, he returned to Tbilisi and worked there as a teacher. He wrote history books, Georgian grammars, and textbooks on philosophy that he needed to teach his students. Since he was in opposition to Russian rule over his homeland, he educated his students in the spirit of Georgian nationalism. In this way he influenced many Georgian intellectuals and writers, including the poet Nikolos Baratashvili . At the same time he was the editor of the first Georgian-language newspaper Tp'ilisis utsk'ebani , a supplement to the Russian Tiflisskie Vedomosti .

His career came to an end in 1832 when a revolt against Russian rule in which he was involved failed. In contrast to the majority of his co-conspirators, who wanted to restore the rule of the Georgian royal dynasty of the Bagratids , he favored the proclamation of a Georgian republic. After he was arrested by the Russian police, he was banished to Vyatka, where he died of tuberculosis in 1836.

In 1994 he was reburied in the Mtatsminda pantheon in Tbilisi.
