Solothurn Classics

Solothurn Classics (formerly. Classic Openair ) was a summer festival in Swiss Solothurn , the 1991-2015 annual end of June / beginning of July took place.

The Openair was first launched in 1991 as a private initiative by opera lover Dino Arici. The evening concerts took place on the St. Ursen Bastion when the weather was fine, and the open air with the Rythalle Solothurn had an alternative when the weather was bad . In 2006, with 11,000 visitors, a utilization of 95% was achieved. Eight operas were performed in a total of eleven performances.

In 2008 the Bulgarian State Opera came to Solothurn as a festival orchestra with orchestra and choir. There were eleven opera performances with international cast. It began with Mozart's Magic Flute with Jörg Schneider and Noëmi Nadelmann . In addition, Don Giovanni and Verdi 's pieces Nabucco , Macbeth , Don Carlo and Un ballo in maschera were also performed.

After 20 editions, Dino Arici resigned after the Openair 2010. The intended successor, Martin Jäggi, surprisingly submitted his resignation in September after just one month. The future of the event was uncertain for a long time and the 2011 edition had to be canceled. In February 2011 the Dino Arici Foundation announced that the 26-year-old lawyer Iris Kofmel, daughter of former National Councilor Peter Kofmel , would be the new director of the Openair.

The Openair was given a new overall appearance under new management and was renamed Solothurn Classics in November 2011 . The Solothurn Classics 2012 took place from June 28 to July 7, 2012. Five operas, an orchestral concert, the operetta Die Csárdásfürstin , the traditional soloist gala and a Romantic Night with arias and folk songs were performed.

In the last few years of its existence, the number of spectators for the Solothurn Classics had fallen; After the 2015 edition, the festival was considered “de facto broke”. As a result, a cooperation with the Aargau Opera Schenkenberg was announced. Their 2013 production “ Il Trovatore ” was artistically successful, but financially it was also a “debacle”. A new festival was to be created that would have organized an open-air opera every year, alternately in the city of Solothurn and in the Brugg - Windisch region . After the Schenkenberg opera also lacked viewers for its production of “ Rigoletto ” in 2015 and subsequently went bankrupt , the performance of “ Tosca ” in Solothurn planned for summer 2017 was canceled and the Solothurn Classics association reported Also bankrupt at the beginning of 2017 after the Friends of the Solothurn Classics association dissolved at the end of November 2016 .
