The Solvayhütte also Solvaybiwak is a refuge of the Swiss Alpine Club on the Matterhorn near Zermatt in the Valais Alps . It is located on the most popular ascent route, the Hörnligrat, the northeast ridge of the Matterhorn.
history
The hut , called Solvay accommodation , was built from 1915 but was not completed until 1917 and is located at 4003 m and is operated by the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC). The Solvayhütte is the only SAC hut that belongs to the SAC Central Association itself.
It offers 10 beds and is equipped with a cell phone. The hut is named after the founder Ernest Solvay , a Belgian chemist and industrialist.
The hut can only be used as emergency accommodation, which is still the case today: The accommodation can only be used for the night on the descent and only in an emergency , according to the SAC hut book in 1931, and further: The hut warden of the Hörnli hut is authorized to charge a fine of CHF 10 per person who spends the night in Refuge Solvay without sufficient reason . The Hörnlihütte is located a good 1100 meters east-northeast and 743 meters below the Solvayhütte.
