The Hörnlihütte is an alpine refuge in the Swiss Alps . It is located at the foot of the Matterhorn on the foothills of the NE ridge (Hörnligrat) above Zermatt at an altitude of 3260  m . The hut was owned by the Monte Rosa in Sion section of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC), which sold the hut to the Zermatt civic community in 2012 . The hut was extensively renovated for the 150th anniversary of the first ascent of the Matterhorn by 2015.

The Hörnlihütte mainly serves as a base for climbing the 4478  m high Matterhorn over the Hörnli and Zmuttgrat ridge.

history

The first Hörnlihütte was built in 1880 and had 17 beds. It has since been expanded and rebuilt several times. In 1911, the Zermatt civic community built the Hotel Belvédère (also Berghaus Matterhorn ) right next to it . Both were merged in 1987 and managed by the civic community and have offered 170 beds since the last renovation in 1982. From 2013 to 2015 the Belvédère was renovated and a new extension was built. The original Hörnlihütte was dismantled. The new Hörnlihütte offers 130 beds.

Hüttenwart was Kurt Lauber from 1995 to 2018, successors are Martin and Edith Lehner.

Ascent

The usual ascent to the hut starts at the mountain station of the Schwarzseebahn ( 2583  m ) on the lake of the same name . From there in about 2-3 hours to the hut. The ascent directly from Zermatt without using the cable car takes 4½ hours.
