features

The imago of Somatochlora cingulata measures 55-68 mm, of which 40 to 50 millimeters on the abdomen ( abdominal omitted), which is relatively large within the genus. The slim, slightly hairy abdomen is brass-colored to black and is very similar to that of Somatochlora albicincta . The transitions of the segmentation are yellowish. The abdominal appendages are black.

The part of the chest ( thorax ) to which the wings attach, the so-called pterothorax, is covered with tiny hairs. The hind wings measure 33 to 41 millimeters. In the otherwise transparent wings, the costalader and the wing mark ( pterostigma ) are yellow-brown. The anterior half of the membranula is white.

On the face, the anteclypeus is light yellow, while the postclypeus, like the occiput, is brown.

Spread and time of flight

The species is common in the northern United States and Canada . It flies between June and September.
