The Scomberoidinae are a subfamily of the jacks (Carangidae) consisting of 13 species .

features

All species of the Scomberoidinae are laterally flattened, elongated or spindle-shaped and covered with small oval, lanceolate or needle-like cycloid scales. They become 25 ( Oligoplites saurus ) to 120 cm ( Scomberoides commersonnianus ) long. The sideline is flaky. They have ten trunk vertebrae and 16 to 17 tail vertebrae. The anal fin is longer than the distance between the pelvic fins and the anal fin and just as long as the dorsal fin. The dorsal fin has five to seven spines. The pectoral and ventral fins are short, the pelvic fins are absent in Parona . The caudal fin is forked. In the caudal fin skeleton there are two or three epuralia and hypuralia that have grown together to form two bone plates. The premaxillary is immobile. A supramaxillary (jawbone) may be present or absent. The number of Branchiostegal rays is seven to nine.
