The Somerville Island ( French Îlot Somerville ) is a small island in the Wilhelm Archipelago off the Graham Coast of Graham Land in the north of the Antarctic Peninsula . It is located 6 km southwest of the Berthelot Islands and 4 km northwest of Darboux Island .
It was discovered by participants in the Fifth French Antarctic Expedition (1908–1910) under the direction of polar explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot . Charcot named it after David Maitland Makgill Crichton Somerville (1850-1915), British proconsul in Christiania , who had overseen the making of clothing and equipment for the research trip.
