qualification

The Estonian Tanel Laanmäe retired with 78.13 m in the qualification
76.74 m was not enough for the Finn Oliver Helander to take part in the finals
72.09 m was far too little for Swede Jiannis Smalios to make it into the final

The athletes competed in two groups for a qualifying round. The qualification distance for reaching the final directly was 82.00 m. Since only six throwers exceeded this required distance - highlighted in light blue, the final field was filled with the following best throwers from both groups to a total of twelve athletes - highlighted in light green. In the end, 79.74 m was enough to make it to the final.

final

August 9, 2018, 8:22 p.m. CEST

The three German participants were among the favorites. Johannes Vetter competed as the reigning world champion and had impressed with the greatest distance in qualifying. Thomas Röhler was the 2016 Olympic champion and Andreas Hofmann had already achieved excellent results this season. Also in attendance were Czech Deputy World Champion 2017 and World Champion in 2013 Jakub Vadlejch, his countryman Petr Frydrych as WM -Dritter of 2017, the Finnish European champion of 2014 to assess Antti Ruuskanen and the Pole Marcin Krukowski with the third-best qualifying distance strong.

After the first round, the Estonian Magnus Kirt, who had achieved 85.96 m, led, somewhat surprisingly, ahead of Hofmann with 85.61 m. In lap two, Röhler took the lead with a throw on 88.02 m. Hofmann rose to 87.60 m and remained second. Röhler improved in the next round to 89.47 m. Krukowski threw 84.55 m and was fourth behind Kirt. Vetter, who had problems getting his performance capabilities, was fifth with 82.59 m.

In the three finals of the best eight throwers there were only minor changes. Ruuskanen improved to sixth with 81.70 m. Vetter increased his best distance to 83.27 m, but that did not change his position. After his Olympic victory in 2016, Thomas Röhler has now also become European champion. Andreas Hofmann won the silver medal ahead of Magnus Kirt and Marcin Krukowski. World champion Johannes Vetter finished fifth ahead of 2014 European champion Antti Ruuskanen.
