The African tamarisk also summer tamarisk ( Tamarix africana , Syn .: Tamarix hispanica ) is a species of the tamarisk ( Tamarix ) in the family of the tamarisk plants (Tamaricaceae).
features
The summer tamarisk is a deciduous, hardy small tree or shrub and therefore a macrophanerophyte . The inflorescences are on average 1 cm thick with hermaphroditic white flowers that grow on older woody branches. This distinguishes them from the similar species Tamarix anglica and Tamarix canariensis , whose inflorescences grow from young, non-woody branches.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.
Occurrence and distribution
The summer tamarisk grows in wetlands affected by brackish water near the littoral and on the Ramblas . It blooms from March to May. The summer tamarisk has a western Mediterranean range that extends from southwest Europe to North Africa. It occurs in the Canary Islands, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Spain, Portugal, France and Italy.
