Son Jong-hyun (born November 30, 1991 in Hoein ) is a former South Korean football player on the position of midfielder .

Career

Son Jong-hyun was born on November 30, 1991 to Son Yong-gil and Ha Yeong-hee in the rural community of Hoein in Boeun County in the central South Korean province of Chungcheongbuk-do . He discovered his love for football at the 2002 World Cup in his own country. Son, who came from an educated academic family, started playing football at the age of ten, but was not supported by his parents at the time, who spoke out against a footballing career. Without his parents' knowledge, he then switched to a school where football was part of the curriculum. Only after he had changed schools did he tell his parents about it. Believing that their son would only play football for a short time and then devote himself to his studies again, the parents agreed. At a young age, Son was called up in the South Korean U-12 and U-13 selections.

After attending high school, Son traveled to the United States in 2012 and did not speak English at the time . He was made aware of his chances in American football through his sister, who lives in Austin , Texas and whose husband works for Samsung . In the United States, he enrolled at the University of Illinois at Chicago and taught himself English through, among other things, watching English-language television series. In 2012 he was invited to a trial training session by the recently founded football franchise Orlando City . Due to misunderstandings between the club and Son, who had interpreters at their side during the negotiations, the contract should not have been signed, whereupon Son subsequently switched to the short-lived Chicago Inferno franchise in the USL Premier Development League . There he completed twelve league games in the 2012 game year and eight championship games in the following year; he did not score a goal.

For the academic year 2014/15 he enrolled at Holy Cross College in Notre Dame in the US state of Indiana and was also accepted into the men's soccer team of HC Saints , the university sports department. Under coach Omar Gallo, Son initially played a more offensive role and was used in all 20 championship games in his junior year, scoring five goals. With the team he moved into the semi-finals of the soccer championship of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC). In his senior year he was mainly used in defensive midfield and defense and moved with the team again into the semi-finals of the CCAC football championship. Son, who had one goal and two assists this year, was elected to the All-CCAC-First team at the end of the game year and also made it to the NAIA -Men's All-Mideast-Region-First in 2015 -Team .

In February 2016, the United Soccer League franchise Louisville City FC announced the signing of the South Korean. Son made his professional debut in the first game of the season in 2016 in a 1-0 away win over Charlotte Independent on March 26, when he played through the full 90 minutes. Under coach James O'Connor , who played for Orlando City when Son completed his trial training there, he was then also used in the two subsequent championship rounds. In the 2-0 home defeat against New York Red Bulls II on April 2, Son was again on the field for the entire 90 minutes; in the 4-1 home win over Orlando City II , the South Korean was only used in the first half and was then replaced by Ben Newnam . After he was subsequently no longer used, coach James O'Connor announced on August 11, 2016 that Son had left the franchise. The reason he cited was the planned completion of his studies at Holy Cross College and the planned completion of the two-year military service in his home country. After goalkeeper Scott Goodwin , who announced his career as a footballer almost two and a half months earlier because he had been admitted to Harvard Medical School , Son is the second player in the relatively young USL franchise to drop out of sports due to university.
