The special weapons warehouse Finsterwalde , the official camouflage name was 2952 Repair-Technical Base of the Air Force (2952 RTB WWS) , is located near Finsterwalde , on the grounds of the Finsterwalde airfield in today's Elbe-Elster district , Brandenburg . It was a special arms depot of the GSSD (Group of Soviet Armed Forces in Germany).

The nuclear free-fall bombs stored here were probably held for the 559th Fighter Bombing Regiment stationed at Finsterwalde Air Base . The regiment belonged to the 105th Jagdbombenfiegerdivison in Grossenhain, which was subordinate to the 16th Air Army.

The storage capacity was 40 to 80 nuclear warheads, which were held for the Sukhoi Su-7 fighter-bomber stationed in Finsterwalde , later for the MiG-23BM and various versions of the MiG-27 .

construction

The special weapons store was built between 1961 and 1964 as a ground-covered storage bunker with about 1.50 meters of soil. The monolithic storage bunker (based on current knowledge, basalt type ) is located behind a two-story technical area. The bunker has an area of around 70 m × 10 m, with the storage room measuring around 40 m × 9 m. The technical area included the ventilation system, the electrotechnical system, the refrigeration system as well as the service and common rooms of the bunker crew. The emergency power system was created externally. In front of the storage room there was a gantry crane in the six meter high transshipment room. The bunker could be driven completely. Two about 45 centimeters thick hydraulically driven massive pressure gates (each about 25 tons) were located at the vehicle entrance and in front of the actual storage room. In between there was originally a one-sided hinged and retractable hermetic door and a simple, thin-walled double-wing gate. The bunker was guarded by around 600 men from a KGB special unit and was subject to the highest level of secrecy.

The bunker system is unused after the withdrawal of the Russian troops. An empty wooden box that was found in the bunker by a film team of the Central German Broadcasting Corporation after the Red Army had withdrawn caused a stir . The box was intended to store a 360 kg nuclear warhead with the number 38 . Since the box was empty, the question arose where the warhead was being put and why without the transport box.

The bunker was largely destroyed by vandalism and arson.
