The ring-shaped solar eclipse of January 26, 2009 mainly took place over the sea. It began in the South Atlantic and passed Africa far south of the Cape of Good Hope . The zone of the annular eclipse moved northeast over the entire Indian Ocean . This is where the peak of the eclipse was reached, the ring-shaped phase lasted 7 minutes and 54 seconds, the width of the ring-shaped eclipse being 280 kilometers. The moon's shadow was moving at this point at around 2,055 km / h over the Indian Ocean.

Towards the end of the eclipse, southern Sumatra with the Krakatau volcano was in the zone of ring-shaped eclipse. The eclipse finally ended in Indonesia at sunset.
