Animation of the annular solar eclipse of February 7, 2008

The annular solar eclipse of February 7, 2008 took place over parts of Antarctica and the South Pacific and was visible in its partial phase in southeast Australia and New Zealand . The eclipse of the Saros cycle 121 occurred in the ascending lunar node of the lunar orbit and was the 60th of this series of 71 eclipses. So it belonged to an expiring Saros, which is shown by the fact that the next but one eclipse of the same family on February 17, 2026 will be the last ring-shaped appearance of this series. The remaining ten eclipses run partially with decreasing size.

Due to the relatively flat angle of incidence of the extended umbra axis, the area of the ring shape reached a considerable width of 444.6 km, the ring phase itself lasted a maximum of only 2 minutes and 14 seconds. The solar eclipse ran - invisible from Europe - between 02:38:22 am CET and 07:11:45 am CET, while the moon's shadow axis roamed over the Antarctic and the South Pacific from 04:19:38 am CET to 05:30:32 am CET. On some South Sea islands, such as the Samoa Islands and Tahiti , the sun set on the horizon before the end of the darkness (see map). In the other areas, the passage of the moon in front of the sun could be seen in full.

Individual evidence

  1. The longest duration of the ring-shaped phase was found at the beginning of this eclipse, at the time of the maximum eclipse, however, the duration was slightly shorter with 2 minutes and 12 seconds (see NASA: Annular Solar Eclipse of 2008 Feb 07 )
