The total solar eclipse of June 30, 1992 was observed in its total phase almost exclusively over the South Atlantic . Only the residents in the east of the South American state Uruguay could experience a sunrise from the totally eclipsed sun. The duration of the total phase was quite long at over 5 minutes. High degrees of coverage of over 80 percent were achieved in the southern Brazilian metropolitan area around São Paulo and in the vicinity of Cape Town in South Africa .
