The sun parakeet ( Aratinga solstitialis ) is a South American parrot.
features
The 30 cm long sun parakeet is usually yellow, orange and red in color, wings and tail are green, slightly shimmering dark blue. The plumage of the young birds is initially green-yellow, the full coloration takes place at about 9 months. The shrill, two-syllable call is often uttered in trees or in flight. The flight is quick and straightforward. The average life expectancy of a sun parakeet is around 20–30 years.
Occurrence
The bird lives in light forests, palm groves, savannahs in northeast Brazil , French Guiana and Venezuela .
Stock situation
According to the “ Red List ” of the IUCN, the population was still frequently occurring until recently, and so the sun parakeet had the threat level LC ( least concern ). In May 2008 it was upgraded to EN ( endangered , endangered).
For comparison: the hyacinth macaw , the imperial parrot or the golden parakeet can also be found there . The population is only estimated at 1,000 to 2,500 animals, with a strong downward trend.
behavior
The sun parakeet lives in smaller groups, but when the food supply is particularly abundant, they flock to form larger swarms. The bird looks for fruits, nuts, seeds and flowers in trees and mainly eats cactus fruits on the ground.
Reproduction
The sun parakeet can reproduce all year round, but mostly mates in spring. The bird breeds in loose colonies and builds the nest in hollows of palms or other trees. The female incubates three or four eggs for around 23 days. The young birds, which fledge at around 50 days, usually stay with their parents for a long time and become sexually mature at around two years of age.
