The Macaws ( Aratinga ) are one of the genus of birds from the family of real parrots (Psittacidae). They are native to South and Central America between 30 ° North and 35 ° South.

These parrots have long, tiered tails. The central control springs are elongated. The sides of the head are fully feathered, only the eye ring is bare. The beak is short and quite broad. Macarons are mostly cave-breeders, but some species also breed in crevices.

In the past, between 15 and 24 species with 53 to 57 subspecies were counted in this genus, depending on the author. However, it was found due to a molecular genetic studies on the one hand the Pavuasittich ( Aratinga leucophtalmus ) only removed with most other Aratinga is related species, on the other hand the traditionally to the genus Nandayus counted Nanday Parakeet is them kinship very close to, the species is thus polyphyletisch in their previous composition . JV Remsen, Jr. therefore proposed that the majority of the species should be transferred to the genera Eupsittula , Psittacara and Thectocercus . This proposal met with broad approval in the professional world.

The genus Aratinga therefore only includes the following species.

The following species are now assigned to other genera.

Genus Eupsittula:

Genus Psittacara:

Genus Thectocercus:
