The Nanday Parakeet ( Aratinga nenday , Syn . : Nandayus nenday ) is a species of bird from the subfamily of the New World parrots . The species occurs in South America.
Appearance
The Nanday Parakeet reaches a body length of 30 centimeters. The plumage is predominantly green. The predominantly black head is striking: the forehead, parting, reins, cheeks and chin are black. In contrast, the back of the head and the neck and the ear covers are yellow-green.
The chest is strikingly tinged with blue. The underbust and the belly are yellow-green, the back and the upper tail-coverts are green. The under tail-coverts are yellow-green. The tail feathers are deep dark gray on the underside, olive green on the top and end in a blue tip. The beak is black.
Distribution area and behavior
The Nandaysitich occurs in southeastern Bolivia, in the south of the Mato Grosso , in Paraguay and in the north of Argentina. He mainly uses savannahs and palm groves as habitat. Sometimes it forms large swarms. The animals feed on seeds, fruits, nuts and berries. They are cave-breeders who occasionally also refer to hollows in fence posts.

The Nanday Parakeet was first imported to Europe in 1870. It still plays a role in the keeping of ornamental birds. For species-appropriate housing, it is necessary to keep at least pairs in aviaries.
