Obří hrad

Obří hrad (German giant castle or giant castle ) is a probably Hallstatt and Latène period castle wall near the Popelná part of the Czech village of Nicov , Jihočeský kraj . It probably dates from the seventh to fifth centuries BC. Chr. And represents one of the most important evidence of Celtic settlement in the Czech Republic. In 1926 the remains of the complex were discovered, since then excavations have unearthed numerous relics of Celtic culture.

location

The castle wall lies on a ridge of the Valy , on a valley side of the Losenice brook in the Bohemian Forest . Below is the village Popelná, which belongs to Nicov, to the southeast. The plant is located in about 950 to 1000 meters height a and is the highest castle wall Czech Republic. The site is surrounded by spruce forest and scree fields.

history

In 1926 archaeologists discovered wall remains and evidence of prehistoric settlement on the north-eastern slope of the Valy. The archaeologists date the origin of the complex to the middle of the first millennium BC. The exact purpose of the facility and the question of who lived and used it have not been adequately clarified. However, the period of origin of the castle is estimated at the 7th to 5th centuries BC.

It is sometimes thought to be related to the extraction and trading of gold . Celtic coins from the 2nd to 1st centuries BC are found here as evidence. Cited. The Celtic gold mining in the area of Kašperské Hory and Sušice is also documented.

Research also considers it possible to function as a place of worship . This thesis is supported by the fact that no evidence of everyday remains such as dishes or bones from eaten animals were found in the central area . The ritual killing of people is also suspected in this context; Julius Caesar already reported about Celtic human sacrifices as an important part of Druidism .

The decay of the fortress was possibly accelerated by the gold mining that began in the 13th century by removing the remains of the wall and digging for the precious metal in the foundations.

The finds from Obří hrad can be seen in the Kašperské Hory Museum.

Partly natural rock walls and partly stone blocks were used to build the castle. Palisades were most likely on the ramparts . Today the facility measures 87 × 70 m. The walls run in two rows, an outer border and an inner fence . The stone blocks that were used in the walls reach a height of up to 5 m.

Legends

The relics of Obří hrad, which are unusual for the inhabitants of the area, have often been the subject of sagas and legends . Above all, the huge stone blocks and the dimensions of the complex led many to believe that the site was the home of giants.

It is said that the inhabitants of Popelná used the bones of the dead giants, which were up to 3 m long, as a bridge over the Losenice brook.

Another story tells of a poor tailor who went to the giant castle to ask for alms for his starving children. But instead of hearing his request, the angry giants threw him down into the Losenice. One of the giants even threw a boulder at him. Miraculously, however, the tailor survived the fall. When he saw the boulder, he noticed that under the earth and mud that covered it was pure gold. From then on the tailor was rid of all his worries.
