history

The place was first mentioned in writing in 1734 and also referred to as Reckeberg or Reckenberg .

In 1838 the scattered settlement Reckerberg , located in a forest clearing, consisted of 14 houses with 118 inhabitants. A mill and a board saw were operated on the Loßenitz . Another mill, the lower mill, belonged to the Stachau court of the Künischen Waldhwozd . The seven-house glassmaker's settlement Goldbrunn and the emphyteutic Chaluppe Ranklau ( Ranklov ) lay apart . The parish was in Nitzau . Until the middle of the 19th century, Reckerberg remained subordinate to the Dominium Bergreichenstein .

After the abolition of patrimonial belonged Recker Mountain 1850 installments as a district to the municipality Nitzau in the judicial district Bergreichenstein and community Stachau in the judicial district Schüttenhofen, the Nitzauer share as Recker mill or Recker Berger mill and Stach Auer proportion than Recker Berger houses was called. From 1868 both parts of Reckerberg belonged to the district of Schüttenhofen . In the 1910 census, Reckerberg had 52 residents, only one of whom spoke Czech. The timber industry and the water power of the Losenice were particularly important in Reckerberg. In 1930 there were two mills in Reckerberg, one of which had a sawmill.

As a result of the Munich Agreement , all of Reckerberg was added to the German Reich in 1938; the Stachau share was separated from the community of Stachy , which remained with the "remaining Czech Republic". Until 1945, Reckerberg belonged to the district of Bergreichenstein as a district of Nitzau . After the Second World War , Reckerberg returned to Czechoslovakia and the division of the village was restored. The majority German-speaking residents were expelled . Most of the houses remained empty and fell into disrepair. In 1949, both parts of Reckerberg were assigned to the newly formed Okres Vimperk. In 1950 the place had 22 inhabitants. In 1951 both shares were renamed Popelná . The part belonging to Stachy was completely evacuated and went out in the 1950s. In the Nicover part only the mill was still inhabited at the end of the 1950s. In the course of the territorial reform of 1960 Popelná came to Okres Prachatice and was incorporated into Stachy together with Nicov. After the decline of forestry, the sawmill was given up and converted into a hotel. At the same time, ski lifts were built on the surrounding mountains . In 1991 the place had six residents. Since January 1st 1993 Popelná has belonged to the Nicov municipality again. In 2001 the village consisted of six houses in which one person lived. Today Popelná mainly benefits from tourism in connection with the Šumava National Park, created in 1991.
