Sonny Lee

Sonny Lee (actually Thomas Ball Lee ; born August 26, 1904 in Huntsville , Texas , † May 17, 1975 in Amarillo ) was an American early jazz trombonist .

Live and act

Lee learned to play the trumpet while attending teacher training colleges in Texas and St. Louis. In Houston he worked with Peck Kelley ; in St. Louis, where he u. a. also appeared in the Booker T. Washington Theater, he played with the Scranton Sirens, in 1925 with Frankie Trumbauer , also with Gene Rodemich , Vincent Lopez and Paul Specht . In St. Louis, he took part in the recording of Charlie Creath for Okeh Records .

In the 1930s Lee worked in the swing orchestras of Isham Jones (1932–36), Benny Goodman (1934/35), Charlie Barnet (1936), Artie Shaw and Woody Herman's first big band as a soloist heard in "I've Had the Blues So Long" and "Take It Easy" (1936). From 1936 to 1938 he played with Bunny Berigan , as a soloist in " I Can't Get Started " and "Mahagony Hall Stomp" (1937).

From 1938 to 1946 he played with Jimmy Dorsey . In the field of jazz he was involved in over 200 recording sessions between 1925 and 1946.
