Sophie Alberti

Sophie Alberti ( born Mödinger ; born August 5, 1826 in Potsdam ; † August 15, 1892 there ) was a German writer .

Sophie Alberti was born in Potsdam as the daughter of privy councilor Mödlinger. She received a very good education and became interested in art and poetry from an early age. Sophie Alberti wrote her first poem at the age of seven, wrote a short comedy at the age of nine and wrote her first novella in French at the age of 13. Their first publication was in 1856 the novella "Else", which was positively received by the critics.

The novella was dedicated to Charles Dickens , whose work " David Copperfield " Sophie Alberti greatly appreciated. In the course of the publication of her literary debut, she was in contact with Charles Dickens, who was delighted with the dedication:

To be associated in that way with the first production of so fervent a head and heart as yours must be, is a high grace and privilege. Whatever my deserts and claims to it may be, at least no man could possibly prize it more.

After the book was mailed to Charles Dickens in April 1856, he was proud to have been associated with the book .

Sophie Alberti's other publications were received positively by the critics, appeared in several editions and were even in several languages, including a. Translated to English, Danish and Polish. Most of the works appeared under her pseudonym Sophie Verena . Sophie Alberti also worked as a translator and published numerous works by Dinah Maria Mulock Craik into German. She freely edited a work by the writer Henry Mayhew .

In 1866 Sophie Alberti married the school councilor Robert Alberti in Potsdam, but he died in 1870. The marriage remained childless. As a widow, Sophie Alberti only left Potsdam for short vacation trips. She also wrote literature for children until her death in 1892.
