Sophie Theresa Pemberton (born February 13, 1869 in Victoria , British Columbia , † October 31, 1959 in Victoria, British Columbia) was a Canadian painter .

Life

Sophie Pemberton was the second daughter of four children of the politician and appraiser of the Hudson's Bay Company Joseph Despard Pemberton (1821-1893) and his wife Theresa Jane Despard Grautoff (1843-1916). She was taught together with her siblings, Frederick Bernard (1865-1947), Ada Georgina (1867-1958) and Harriet Susan (1871-1949), exclusively at home by governesses and tutors with the help of the grandfather's library .

She received her first drawing lessons from a local painter who urged her to continue studying in Paris . Accompanied by his mother, Pemberton went to France to study with Tony Robert-Fleury at the renowned Académie Julian in Paris. She gained international recognition in 1897 when she exhibited her works at the Royal Academy of Arts in London , including the award-winning work The little Boy Blue .

Sophie Pemberton was married twice; first with the Anglican priest Arthur Beanlands († 1917) and shortly afterwards with the businessman Horace Deane-Drummond. Both marriages remained childless.
