Sophus Michaelis

Sophus August Berthel Michaëlis (born May 14, 1865 in Odense , † January 28, 1932 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish poet.

Life

Michaelis' father was German and the mother was of Spanish descent. She died when he was a little boy. The operators of a pharmacy in his hometown recognized his great talents and ensured a good school education. After graduating from high school, he studied linguistics , art history and music. Travels to Italy, Greece and Egypt deepened his knowledge of the classical culture of these countries. The diverse experiences gave him a solid basis for historical novels such as The Eternal Sleep , which describes Napoleon's expedition to Russia . Other works are Hellenes and Barbarians (1914). In Revolutionary Wedding he mastered spectacular content.

He was first and foremost a poet who could express his feelings in elegant verse. Michaelis was the most popular writer in his country in his time and his works achieved numerous editions.

Michaelis was married to the Danish writer Karin Michaëlis from 1895 to 1911 .
