The Lapland shrew , also mask shrew and Eurasian mask Rotzahnspitzmaus ( Sorex caecutiens ), is a species in the genus Sorex . It is a Palearctic species. It is one of the few insectivores that make up the Arctic fauna .

Distribution area according to IUCN

The body length of the Eurasian masked red-toothed shrew, including the tail, is only 75 to 115 millimeters. It weighs between 3 and eight grams. Their fur on the top of their bodies is a dark golden brown. The underside is silver-white.

The main differences to the tundra red-toothed shrew are in the genetic area. As with most other red-toothed shrews, there are five single-pointed teeth (unicuspids) on each side of the upper jaw between the incisors and molars. Of these, the third and fourth teeth are noticeably smaller than the first two. The fifth is just an inconspicuous needle.

The Lapland shrew is mainly active at dusk and can also be seen during the day. It mainly eats beetles , ants and other insects, as well as earthworms, millipedes and remains of carcasses. Females have one or two litters per year with 2 to 11 (usually 7 or 8) pups per litter. These reach sexual maturity after 9 to 12 months.
