Sorhagenia lophyrella is a butterfly ( moth ) fromthe Chrysopeleiidae family .

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 8 to 11 millimeters. Sorhagenia lophyrella is similar to Sorhagenia rhamniella , but differs in its slightly lighter front wings and pale gray hind wings. A reliable differentiation is only possible through a genital examination .

In the males, the uncus is narrow and has a tuft of bristles. The valves have a very large cucullus and are slightly longer than the ampulla. The ampulla is club-shaped and tapers to a point. The saccule is short and reaches the middle of the cucullus. It is thickened subapically and tapers distally . The apex is pointed. The costa has two small and pointed appendages. The juxta is triangular, the vinculum is broadly V-shaped. The aedeagus has a small cecum penis.

In females the distal edge of the ostium is straight. The lateral appendages of the genital plate are long and gradually taper to a thread-like point. The anrum widens in front of the confluence of the ductus bursae . The ductus bursae widens towards the corpus bursae, it is very wrinkled and about twice as long as the antrum. The corpus bursae is oval and slightly toothed. The signs are funnel-shaped.

distribution

Sorhagenia lophyrella is widespread in Europe, Asia Minor and the Caucasus .

biology

The caterpillars develop on Purgier buckthorn ( Rhamnus cathartica ), rock buckthorn ( Rhamnus saxatalis ) and dwarf buckthorn ( Rhamnis pumila ). The caterpillars are also rarely found on Alpine buckthorn ( Rhamnus alpina ) and holly buckthorn ( Rhamnus alaternus ). The caterpillars live from early April to late May. They first feed on the seed capsules and later also on the loosely spun together terminal leaves. The caterpillars pupate in a light cocoon on the ground. The species forms one generation a year. The moths fly from mid-May to early August and can be tapped by the host plants.
