Sorhagenia is a genus of butterflies from the family of cosmopterigidae (Cosmopterigidae).
features
The head of the butterfly is smoothly scaled . The labial palps are elongated and fairly short. The front wings are lanceolate and have a dark brownish gray basic color. On the front wings there are four, partly large patches of protruding scales. The hind wings are lanceolate and narrower than the fore wings. They are pale gray to dark gray.
The genital fittings of the males are symmetrical. The uncus is short, truncated or pointed. The valves have a separate cucullus and sacculus as well as a large ampulla. The juxta is triangular or trapezoidal and heavily sclerotized . The vinculum is wide and there is no saccus. The aedeagus is short, the cecum penis is sack-shaped and distally tubular. The 7th abdominal sternite is sclerotized and often covered with a row of coarse bristles at the back.
In females, the apophyses are of equal length, the apophyses anteriores are often connected with a sclerotized ligament. The ostium is surrounded by a heavily sclerotized genital plate, which laterally has a triangular, conical or ribbon-shaped protrusion. The antrum is sclerotized and often bulbous in front. The ductus bursae is needle-punched and wrinkled. The corpus bursae is rounded or oval and has two funnel-shaped signs with a thorn in the middle.
Most species of the genus Sorhagenia cannot be habitually differentiated with certainty. It is often not necessary to dissect the moth to examine the genital fittings. In the males, the scales of the anal tuft can be removed to determine the size and shape of the cucullus, ampulla and sacculus . In females, the removal of the scales at the rear edge of the 6th sternite reveals the upper part of the genital plate. This is usually sufficient for determination.
distribution
The genus is represented in Europe with four species. Two types occur in Asia Minor . Other species are known from the Russian Far East and North America .
biology
The caterpillars of the genus live either monophagous or oligophagous on buckthorn plants (Rhamnaceae).
