Sotira (Famagusta District)
Sotira (Greek. Σωτήρα ) is a village community ( community ) in the southeast of the Mediterranean island of Cyprus . The village is located in the Famagusta district of the Republic of Cyprus .
The place is located on the southwestern shore of the paralimni lake and has 5,474 inhabitants (2011). He is one of the Kokkinohoria ( "red villages" , based on the agriculturally valuable red soil). Neighboring communities are Paralimni in the east, Dherynia in the north, Frenaros in the north-west, Liopetri in the south-west and Agia Napa in the south-east. South of the town runs the highway A 3 , where there is also a drain and driveway are. In the south, the municipality extends to the coast of the Mediterranean .
There are two culturally significant churches in Sotira: The Agios Mamas is a regular cross-domed church with indicated cross arms and octagonal drum dome from the 15th century, in the chancel there are poorly preserved depictions of an ascension and a Pentecostal miracle. The Panagia Chordakiotissa on the outskirts is similar and dates from the 12th century. There are also three other churches in and near the place: Metamorphosis tou Sotiros , Agios Georgios and Agios Theodoros . The Sotira Ecclesiastical Museum is also located in the village .
The football club Onisilos Sotira comes from Sotira and currently plays in the second division of the Republic of Cyprus.
