course
The Oued Soummam is created by the confluence of the Oued Sahel and the Oued Bou Sellam south of the city of Akbou in the province of Bejaia at an altitude of about 167 m . The river then flows in numerous windings in a northeasterly direction and finally flows into the Mediterranean in the south of the city of Bejaia .
Tributaries and reservoirs
The double dammed Oued Soummam has several smaller and mostly dammed tributaries.
history
The Oued Soummam was already known to hunters and gatherers in prehistoric times . The Romans also used it as a link between the coast and the hinterland; that of Pliny d. Ä. the ancient name handed down was Nasava . The Kabyle - Berber name was assemmam 'sauer' or Assif Abbas .
ecology
The underflow of the river is heavily polluted by the discharge of untreated sewage from the chemical industry; therefore fish deaths occur again and again .
