history

Mausoleum at Akbou

The valley of the Oued Soummam was already roamed by hunters and gatherers in prehistoric times ; later nomads came and then the first settlements arose. A mausoleum (qoubba) for a Romanized Numid by the name of Firmus was probably built in late Roman times . The Arab conquest of the Maghreb and the early Berber dynasties of North Africa ( Almoravids , Almohads and Merinids ), which invaded from Morocco , left no traces. The valley of Soummam was ruled by the Hammadids and Constantine ; Around the year 1510, the kingdom or sultanate of Beni Abbes , which existed until 1872, was established here , but which perished after armed conflicts with the French colonial power.

Attractions

  • The mausoleum, resembling a cube in plan and elevation , rises on a ridge. The exact dates of its creation and even the purpose of the structure are unknown and the subject of much speculation.
  • In the village itself there is a grave for a Turkish official.
